Ayehu’s New Advanced Features in NG v1.5 [Webinar Recap]

Author: Guy Nadivi

In response to growing user requests to add more flexibility to the Ayehu NG automation platform, Ayehu has released NG v1.5. This release will significantly expand the scope of what you can automate in your environment, all from a single pane of glass, and we think that makes it a real game changer in the IT orchestration and automation market.

If you’re an existing user of Ayehu NG, or even if you’re just thinking about trying us on for size, you probably know that one of the core strengths of our solution is how easy and quickly you can plug Ayehu into various ITSM platforms, cyber security tools, operating systems, messaging and notification tools, and increasingly chatbots and AI services. Almost all of these integrations can be activated seamlessly without writing a single line of code.

And the purpose of providing you with all these pre-built integrations and connectors that make up our ever-expanding ecosystem, is to simplify your ability to orchestrate automation across any platform in your environment. All from a single pane of glass!

So, here’s what’s really exciting about this new version of NG. We’ve added a “Do It Yourself” capability to allow you to build your own platform-specific activities without the need for Ayehu to do it for you.

From the feedback we’ve received, that’s really going to appeal to those of you who aren’t afraid to roll up your sleeves, do a little coding, and craft your own specific intelligent IT automation activities.

In fact, when you see how easy we’ve made it to build your own activities, we think some of you non-coders might even be tempted to take a crack at it yourself and perhaps fulfill some aspirations on your personal automation wish list.

Without further ado then, let’s dive into what’s new in our latest release of NG, v1.5:

  • Activity Designer – This is the big one. It’s a new feature designed to give users the option to build their own activities, which marks the first time they’re not relying on us to build an activity. You already know we provide an Out-Of-The-Box library of more than 500 no-code, pre-built activities. With the Activity Designer though, customers can now independently develop or modify existing activities in Python, C# or .Net to extract further value through customization that meets specific needs.
  • GitHub Community Repository – Ayehu now has a new community on GitHub that contains more than 100 of Ayehu’s workflow templates, as well as source code for built-in activities. Customers can use this in conjunction with the Activity Designer to create custom activities based on existing pre-built workflows. The GitHub Community Repository also provides free access to other peer-developed workflow templates and activities which have already been created and contributed to the community.
  • Ayehu Academy Advanced Courses – We now have two new Ayehu Automation Academy courses – Activity Designer Essentials and Advanced Activity Designer. Together, these courses help train and certify developers in creating new activities using the Activity Designer. The Academy has already certified nearly 1,000 IT automation engineers since its inception earlier this year.

Let’s talk a bit more about the Activity Designer.

Typically, when building a workflow you simply drag and drop activities onto a canvas, and position them in the order you want them to execute. There’s no coding, scripting, or programming of any kind required. All you have to do is configure any particular activity by entering some parameters into a popup window, as shown in the image below:

With the new Activity Designer, you can build your own activities from scratch, in Python, C#, or .NET. We believe this will typically be for a system we haven’t integrated yet, perhaps some home-grown in-house application. But it can also be used to create new custom activities for an existing integration, like ServiceNow or SolarWinds. This is a big deal because now organizations will be able to take previously unintegrated systems and incorporate them into enterprise-wide orchestration and automation via Ayehu’s single pane of glass. The Activity Designer interface is shown in the image below:

Ayehu’s GitHub Community Repository marks an expansion of our presence on GitHub’s open-source community, and can be seen at this link: – https://github.com/Ayehu

At the repository, you’ll find:

  • 100+ Ayehu workflow templates
  • Source code for built-in activities

There are many benefits to our users from this new repository, including:

  • Shorter time to value through reuse of existing, pre-built workflows
  • Shorter time to value thru customization of open source activities
  • Free access to peer-developed workflow templates and activities

Here’s an example. If we want to see what kinds of workflow templates are already available for Cisco devices, we can just click on the Cisco category, and drill down to all the workflow templates you can access that are Cisco-specific, as seen in the image below:

These new features are also accompanied by new advanced courses created for the Ayehu Academy, which can be found on our website ayehu.com under the Customers menu.

The two new Ayehu Automation Academy courses are:

  • Activity Designer Essentials
  • Advanced Activity Designer

Together, these courses help train and certify developers in creating new activities using the Activity Designer.

Ayehu recommends getting certified because your new knowledge will enhance 2 areas of interest:

  • Your organization’s automation capabilities
  • Your own personal professional standing.

Furthermore, as this market continues to grow, we anticipate new income opportunities will be created for Certified Activity Designers. The Academy has already certified about 1,000 IT automation engineers despite only opening earlier this year. That’s a reflection of the growing interest in automation, and if you’re one of those IT automation engineers, you’ve positioned yourself very nicely for the growth curve ahead.

Ayehu Featured in Mergermarket

Ayehu is pleased to announce the company’s recently featured interview in Mergermarket, the leading provider of forward-looking M&A intelligence and data to M&A professionals and corporates around the world.

In anticipation of the company’s plans to close a Series B round of fundraising over the coming few months, Ayehu’s CEO and founder Gabby Nizri sat down with Mergermarket’s Chris Metinko to discuss the details.

The ultimate goal is to raise enough capital to facilitate entry into the cloud as well as extend the company’s machine learning capabilities. In order to achieve these goals, the new round must raise between $10 million and $15 million.

This latest move comes as part of the company’s ongoing shift from general IT process automation to a more targeted focus on the sector of automated cybersecurity incident response. This shift has resulted in revenue growth of 250% in 2016 alone and the company has officially reached the point of breakeven cash flow. Today Ayehu serves over 150 enterprise-level customers and growing.

In order to fulfill this round of funding, which could close as early as March, a new lead investor will likely be needed. A strategic partnership in either the managed service provider or security realm may also be a possibility. The company has been receiving inbound inquiries on this even before deciding to officially seek this latest round.

In terms of competition, Nizri pointed out in his interview that there are several different angles to consider. From the general IT automation perspective, the company competes with such well-known brands as ServiceNow, Hewlett-Packard and BMC Software. From the cybersecurity angle, the main players include IBM, FireEye, Phantom and Hexadite. Additionally, there are the competitors who also feature embedded tools, such as Microsoft, VMware and CA Technologies.

According to the Mergermarket interview, Nizri mentioned the fact that the company will also continue to keep its options open for a potential exit down the road. To date, Ayehu has raised approximately $6 million in funding.

New Cybersecurity Regulation Takes Effect this Month

New Cybersecurity Regulation Takes Effect this MonthThe state of NY has officially instituted a new cybersecurity regulation that officially takes effect as of today, March 1st, 2017. This somewhat controversial new regulation imposes more detailed rules on those in the banking and insurance industries with the goal of protecting consumers and institutions alike against cyber-attacks.

This is the first regulation of its kind to be adopted by a US state, though trends certainly indicate that others will likely follow suit due to continued frustration and concern with data breaches. Among other things, the law mandates that financial and insurance institutions must officially employ a CISO, implement multifactor authentication policies and that all cybersecurity incidents must be reported within 72 hours.

“New York is the financial capital of the world, and it is critical that we do everything in our power to protect consumers and our financial system from the ever increasing threat of cyberattacks.” ~ New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo

In reality, many of the requirements in the NY regulation have already been implemented by larger financial institutions. For instance, the law requires that organizations:

  • Develop comprehensive cybersecurity programs which include written policies that address such important factors as
    • Access controls
    • Asset inventory
    • Data governance
    • Business continuity
  • Perform periodic risk assessments and yearly penetration tests
  • Use encryption must for all data – both in transit and at rest
  • Establish a written incident response plan

Additionally, the regulation states that CISOs must send annual reports to the board of directors. These things are already common practice for many institutions, so there won’t be much change for them.

“It’s one of the most comprehensive cybersecurity regulations in the financial sector.” ~ Luke Dembosky, former cybercrime prosecutor with the US Justice Department.

All organizations in the state of NY are required to submit a statement to the Superintendent of Financial Services by the 15th of February every year certifying compliance. Although the new regulation technically takes effect on March 1, all institutions affected by the policy have an additional 180 days to comply. Some built-in grace periods within the regulation provide up to two years to come into compliance with certain provisions. Additionally, smaller institutions may apply for exemptions.

Some of the details of this new regulation may be challenging to implement, particularly for smaller organizations with limited resources. Utilizing automated cybersecurity incident response may be the key to getting and staying compliant.

Three Key Takeaways from the 2017 RSA Conference

RSA Conference 2017Last week marked the ever-expanding annual RSA Conference in San Francisco. Over 40,000 cybersecurity professionals came together to share stories and learn about the latest technology to stop hackers and cyber-criminals from getting their hands on an organizations’ crown jewels. From deception solutions to cloud security, the 2017 conference lived up to the hype. We even introduced our next generation automation and orchestration platform, with machine learning intelligence.

Here are three key takeaways from the 2017 RSA Conference.

Takeaway 1: The cybersecurity skills shortage struggle is real…

You’ve all heard the news of the impending cybersecurity skills shortage to the tune of 1.8 million open positions by 2022 and you may have thought it was just sensationalizing or an exaggeration, but you’d be wrong. Time and again we spoke with security professionals at our booth about how they don’t have the resources to be truly effective. A couple people mentioned the volume of incidents in their SOC are increasing as was their concern about not wanting to be the next headline-making organization because they missed an indication of breach or malware taking hold.

Many of the attendees we talked with who stopped by our booth wanted to learn about security automation and orchestration as a practical alternative to the cybersecurity skills shortage. Given the advancements in machine learning technology and growing acceptance of human-augmented decision support (or a human in the loop), cybersecurity incident response automation is emerging as a viable option for SOC teams at both enterprises and MSSPs.

Takeaway 2: An extensible cybersecurity platform is a must-have…

One of the most interesting themes from attendees we talked with was about needing an extensible platform. Gone are the days of a security product simply having the capability to work with other security tools and systems. Now, security professionals – from the top down to the end-users – need a platform that is fully integrated with the multiple, disparate tools leveraged to defend their organization against attacks from malware, ransomware, antivirus, malicious outsiders/insiders, endpoint protection, and the list goes on.

Attendees simply expected any platform on the market today to be integration ready out-of-the-box. Further, with the proliferation of cloud applications and organizations building in-house applications, the platform’s APIs should enable custom extensibility.

Takeaway 3: Semi-automated workflows are in high demand…

The concept of automated incident response is not new in the cybersecurity space. When the first generation security automation tools made it to market 20+ years ago, the maturity level of the technology was at a minimum. Horror stories abound of the inability of the then “state-of-the-art” technology to effectively decipher between legitimate alerts and false positives. Instead, every alert was deemed a real threat. The added inability to selectively shutdown infrastructure components involved in an incident only exacerbated the situation, dooming early hopes that security automation was viable. As you can imagine, or maybe even experienced first-hand, chaos ensued and the technology was abandoned.

Fast-forward to the 2017 RSA Conference and, having learned from past mistakes, a new chapter on security automation has begun. The automated cybersecurity incident response conversations at our booth focused on semi-automated workflow capabilities, where a human is in the loop (read: in control) at all times making decisions. Given the aforementioned cybersecurity skills shortage, semi-automation frees up significant time from dealing with increasing volumes of manual, error-prone tasks and helps to greatly reduce (and even possibly eliminate) false positives, allowing the operations team to focus on true security threats.

All in all, the 2017 RSA Conference lived up to the hype as the most talked about and most attended security conference of the year. We’re already making plans for the 2018 conference and can’t wait to talk cybersecurity incident response automation and orchestration throughout the coming year.
